Manhattan-All PS6 vs. PS33 G&T

Hi all,

Our older kid is going into K next year. We are zoned for PS6 and have an offer to PS33 G&T. I'm trying to think about the value of having a 5-10 minute walk to school (not to mention a school that is, according to most folks, a very good school with an incredible fundraising machine attached to it, involved parents, motivated kids, no potential G&T/gen-ed rift, the ability to have 92Y after school pick her up directly from PS6, etc.) vs. a 45-60 minute bus ride (each way) to a (again, according to most folks) strong G&T program -- i.e. having her surrounded "only" by G&T peers -- with excellent exmissions, probably better than PS6's at the margins. That's judging based on public school exmissions -- based on what the PS33 Open House shared and what can be found on the DOE website for the top 5 middle schools that PS6 feeds, that's my understanding thus far. Candidly, I haven't gotten much information on private exmissions for either program yet. (I don't know if our goal is public or private middle/high school. I think we just want to maximize optionality at this point, who knows what school will be the best place for her later on yet?) It seems to me that both PS6 and PS33 G&T are successful because of very involved parents. I've been told that my kid will be happy at PS6 and thrive there by educators who know her well. I don't know that a single kid from her preschool has ever gone to PS33 G&T. So we're just sort of flying a bit blind here.

Which leads me to: I'd love to hear from anyone who made the decision (either way) between these two programs -- what motivated the choice and how has the decision played out for your kid(s)/family? If you are willing to have a conversation offline, even better.

Also, my understanding is that if we register for PS33 G&T then our PS6 registration gets blown away and is then likely filled by someone on the PS6 K waitlist -- so if PS33 G&T turns out to be something besides what we hope it to be during K... then there's unlikely to be a path back to PS6 until 1st grade. But this isn't yet confirmed with DOE directly. Would love to know if anyone has knowledge/experience with this sort of situation and how it plays out.

Thanks and good luck to all parents making their G&T decisions now.

Hi all - Very fortunate that our child got into Q300. Was curious if anyone knows of any good ways to connect with other parents with kids entering Kindergarten this year.

Just found out that there is a breakfast happening this Saturday so I'm sure we'll meet a few folks that way.

Thanks in advance! Just want to do whatever we can to ensure a smooth transition for our little one as she's been in the same daycare for the past 3 years.

Manhattan-All PS 33 vs PS 11

Hi -

We got into PS 33 and are planning to accept, but found out we are very highly ranked on the waitlist for PS 11 (which I had obviously initially preferred, as I ranked it before PS 33). I spent all weekend convincing myself that 33 was great, and now am confused about what to do if we get into 11 (which I had initially been much more excited for). I am slightly concerned about the lack of HW at 11 - has anyone with kids there found this to be an issue? Any other insights or thoughts also welcome!

Thanks!!

Hi All

Looking for some advice for my daughter. She got into PS 166 G&T program today but is registered to join PS 87 our local public school. We need to decide by end of day...so any thoughts on PS 166 G&T program as I do not have much idea on it.

Thanks !

Manhattan-UES PS 6 vs. PS 198 G&T

We are zoned for PS 6 but got an offer for PS 198 district G&T. This is for kindergarten. Both schools are close so distance is not a problem. However, I am not sure how good is the education at PS 198 since it is a district program. My daughter is advanced for her age in reading and math so it might be best for her to be with students that are at similar level but I have to admit that I really like the resources and the facilities at PS6.

Anyone here that had started at PS 198 and switched to PS6?

Hi! I have a couple of questions here:
1) would sibling priority apply for an older child applying to middle school if their younger sibling is in elementary school

2) my older child is in a gen ed program- and I cannot afford private tutoring. I plan on using workbooks and websites. Can someone give me guidance for books or websites that can help prepare him for the 4th grade test and for the entry exam for a city wide school which he would take in 5th grade?

Thanks!!!

My 2nd grade daughter has been offered a seat in the 5 week STEM Summer in the City Program, at PS36 Manhattan. I was wondering whether anyone would be willing to share their experience, if their child has attended the camp. We’re grateful to be offered a seat but want to make sure the program is fun and stimulating (it’s a 4 day/5 week commitment). Thank you.

Any thoughts on these two schools. I really like 527. So far my impression of 198 G&T is less favorable. Pros and cons of each?

BK-Other G&T vs progressive ed

Hi there,
Do you guys have any opinion on progressive education and what you would prefer g&t or progressive ed? My kid is in a nice progressive opt out school in pre-k. People seem to love the school but I am concerned about middle school admission. I have a feeling that it is more about nice (really nice) community rather than education.
Then we got an offer to a district g&t school with a much better commute for us. People also love this school but test scores are pretty average. Somehow I expect kids in g&t classes to be more motivated and I think it is important. But maybe I am wrong?
Could you please share your opinions on progressive vs g&t? I need to pick someone's brain.

Question, parents. My rising first grader got a district G&T offer, which I think we'll accept. Do you think it's worthwhile to test for second grade to take a shot at a citywide school? Even if we get a 99 this time, I understand that the chances depend strictly on attrition at this point.

Are there any success stories out there?

Also, my other child will be testing for K. If he got a 99 and an offer to a citywide, would the older child get sibling priority with 97+ even if they're applying at the same time?

Hi everyone. This msg was buried in another thread but I wanted to bring people's attention to it who might be interested in Citywide Waitlists for G&T. I created a Google spreadsheet where we can track waitlist positions for the 4 citywide G&T schools: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets...it?usp=sharing

I can add other citywides upon request.

Each person interested in participating can start their own column, and whenever you get an update on your status on the waitlist, please fill in your waitlist position for the appropriate school on that appropriate date. This will allow us to observe day-by-day how the waitlists are moving. Also, as a concerned parent who is hoping/waiting to find out how these waitlists have moved in the past, I think providing such information will help parents understand their chances next year (assuming waitlists move somewhat similarly each year).

Thanks,

shmedley

Queens PS 115 GnT vs PS 098 Kindergarten, district 26

We got in PS098 K program, and we were very happy.
My son scored 91 on the GnT test so we don't really have much hope for GnT program, but we put in PS115 anyway. Surprisingly we got an offer for PS115 GnT program.

Really appreciate if any of Queens parents know PS115 shed some insights here, esp. their GnT program. Also any insights for PS098 would be appreciated as well since we are trying to decide if it's PS098 or PS115 GnT class by the end of next week.

Thanks in advance.

Would love to hear from your experiences. For parents who sent their kids into G&T in 1st grade, what was the adjustment like?

Particularly:
- How was the social adjustment? Did your kid find it tough or did they find the new class welcoming and maybe even liked it better due to like-minded peers?
- If they loved their Kindergarten class in the previous school, how long did it take for them to get used to the new environment and to get over missing the old school?
- How about the academic adjustment? How long did they take to catch up to a more academic atmosphere and were they at all intimidated/nervous about it?
- If it's the first time they take a school bus, any issues there?

Thank you for sharing.
