All NYC Understanding the ISEE Lower Level Test for NYC Independent Middle School Admissions

The ISEE® (Independent School Entrance Exam®) is a test created by the ERB (Educational Records Bureau.) The ISEE® Lower Level test is used for entrance into the 5th and 6th grade of many independent and magnet schools.

The ISEE® Lower Level consists of Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, Reading Comprehension, Mathematics Achievement and Essay sections.

Verbal Reasoning
The Verbal Reasoning section has synonym and sentence completion portions that are divided into 34 questions that are to be answered in 20 minutes.

Quantitative Reasoning
The Quantitative Reasoning section consists of 38 Word Problems that are to be completed in 35 minutes. The Word Problems in the Quantitative section relate to the following Mathematic concepts:

Numbers and Operations
  • Geometry
  • Problem Solving
  • Probability
  • Algebra
  • Measurement

Test takers are given a 5-minute break after the Quantitative Reasoning section.

Reading Comprehension
The Reading Comprehension of the Lower Level ISEE consists of 5 reading passages each followed by 5 questions. The 25 questions of this section are to be completed in 25 minutes and relate to the following concepts:

Main and Supporting Ideas
  • Vocabulary
  • Interpretation
  • Organization and Logic
  • Tone/Style/Figurative Language

Mathematics Achievement
The Mathematics Achievement section has is divided into 30 questions that are to be answered in 30 minutes. The questions relate to the same Mathematical concepts as the Quantitative Reasoning section.

Test takers are given a 5-minute break after the Mathematics Achievement section.

Essay
Test takers are given 30 minutes to plan and write an essay on a random topic in blue or black pen. The essay is not graded but is sent to the schools to which the test taker is applying to as a writing sample.
